Being able to block and immediately go into an attack is a great way to kill your opponent, or stop their attacks against you. Every one of our 8 basic blocks has a return attack that can be used. Though block attacks combos do require more control than just a normal block. You need to be able to control how big you are blocking on top of controlling the return attack to your opponent.
Points of safety
This is an advanced way to fight, and it needs to be done with control and care. This way of fighting isn’t a surefire way to win your fight with a singe shot. You will have multiple attempts, and should take your time for each one. Both opponents are normally moving when attacking, and being attacked, which means being aware of the range changing as its happening is an absolute necessity.
- Riposte with Control: A riposte is a return attack after a block. It is a very reactive move, so it should be done with care.
- Your Opponent is Vulnerable: Your opponent is most vulnerable during and immediately after their attack. You are in control of their safety at that moment.
- There Is Always Another Chance: Not every block needs to be followed by an attack. If it’s not good or not safe, just wait.
General Points
You should have a very firm understand of the 8 blocks, and be able to utilize them effectively before trying to add in the attacks. All the blocks, and attacks can be modified to be utilized better in each scenario. Feeling what block to use, and when to use a riposte attack will be learned over time. Always remember fencing is about surviving, not necessarily killing your opponent. You have to be able to survive their attack before landing your own.
- Most Effective Way To Win: Block/attack combos are the most effective way to get a kill because your opponent is most exposed. You have a direct line past their defense along their same line of attack.
- Block THEN Attack: It is tempting to combine a block and attack into a single action, but remember to block FIRST. With practice, the time between your block and attack will decrease.
- Find What Comes Naturally: There are many different ways to riposte. Find what feels comfortable and natural to you. Don’t force what feels odd.
