  • You are the Safety Monitor: Officers are in charge of the day-to-day safety of the company. They should be the epitome of safety in the group.
  • You Deal With Issues: Under the direction of the Captain, officers address issues when the arise. Fencers should report personal problems to you, not deal with them themselves.
  • Praise in Public, Correct in Private: Fencers should always feel safe in your care. They will do so when they are praised in public and corrected in private. Don’t embarrass a fencer.

  • Be Present: Show up on time and be actively engaged in the group. Promote others to do so as well.
  • First Follower: If someone is trying to start a movement or get something done, follow along and help gather everyone else.
  • Do Your Job: Each officer typically has an assigned role they play in the company. It is your responsibility to fulfill them. If you don’t know how, find out.
  • Talk, Don’t Gossip: As an officer, you may have access to sensitive information about people or the company. Be respectful when discussing this information and don’t share it.
  • Believe in Yourself: You are more capable than you believe yourself to be. You were asked to be an officer because you are trusted and ready to be one.
  • Be an Example: As an officer, you should uphold company values to the highest standard. Be safe, honorable, have a positive attitude, and focus on your skill.

  • Hang out with an Officer: Ask how you can get involved, help out, and find ways to serve.
  • Attend Officers’ Meetings: If the Captain allows it, attend officers’ meetings and engage with the officers.
  • Review Lessons and Articles: Get to know the company by reviewing lessons and reading/writing articles on Band and the website.
  • Volunteer to Lead at Practice: Work with the officers to lead out a Swordsman or student-led day.
  • Practice Being a First Follower: Be the first to support what the officers are doing.
