- Everybody is Stupid: One of the prime responsibilities of a fencing teacher is to present and ensure that all Safety principles are taught and understood. Assume that everyone is “stupid” and needs to hear the safety instructions for everything you teach.
- Monkey See Monkey Do: You can only expect students to be as safe as you are. Demonstrating that you are a safe fencer both on and off the field will enable you to expect your students to be safe too.
- You Are Responsible: As a teacher, you create and provide the environment for the student. Be responsible for the type of environment and experience you are providing them. The students should feel safe and empowered to learn and ask questions.

- Ask Open Ended Questions: Yes and no answers do not demonstrate understanding from the students. Challenge their understanding with open-ended questioning and opportunities to discuss or demonstrate the concepts taught.
- EDGE Method: Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, Enable.
- It Takes Practice: Your first lessons will not go perfectly. It’s okay if you don’t get to everything. Keep practicing and gather feedback on ways you can improve.
- Come Prepared: Know the material. If you don’t know, it’s okay to ask yourself or better yet, find out before lesson time. Use the resources available to help support your lesson.
- Stay With Them: The lesson doesn’t end just because you covered the material. Continue working with your students throughout the rest of practice to help them implement and observe the concepts taught.
- Your Unique Perspective: The written lessons are a guideline. You have been asked to teach, so share your unique perspective in conjunction with what needs to be taught.
Training Ideas
- Accept Opportunities: When someone asks you to teach, don’t be afraid to say yes. You have a week to prepare and even longer to master.
- Take the Lessons Yourself: Refresh your knowledge of the content. Different fencers have different takes on the topics, so you can always learn more about the subject you are teaching.
- Shadow: Follow a teacher you respect and learn from their style.
- Practice with a Peer: Teach a peer a principle and ask for feedback on how you can improve your teaching.
