Being a Master or an Apprentice

  • Establish Expectations: When forming a new master & apprenticeship, establish expectations and boundaries from both sides, so you both know what to expect from one another.
  • Honor Goes Both Ways: What you do reflects on the other.
  • Keep it Appropriate: Be aware of social etiquette, particularly regarding age and gender. You never want to find yourself in a compromising situation.

Master

  • Consistency is Key: Whatever rhythm you establish in your relationship, keep it going. Follow up on assignments you’ve given your student. Ask assessment questions and monitor their progress.
  • You Have Things to Teach: Trust your knowledge. Reflect on your journey and put yourself back in their shoes. What are they ready to learn? Your unique perspective is what they want to hear.
  • Honor the Commitment: If you make plans, make them a priority in your fencing experience.
  • Know When to End: Don’t drag them along if they aren’t progressing, or if you feel they’re ready for someone new. Kick them out of the nest.

Apprentice

  • Trust Your Master: Practice what they preach. Listening is good, but implementing is better. It’s okay to ask questions, but trust the method.
  • You Have Things to Learn: Set aside what you know and allow yourself to struggle for a time. New techniques and mentality are tough but will help you grow in the long run.
  • Honor the Commitment: If you make plans, make them a priority in your fencing experience.
  • Ask Questions: You’re just as responsible for your learning as your master is in providing instruction. Know what you want and ask for it, but be prepared to accept the answer.

  • Observe other Masters and Apprentices: Talk to and work with those who are currently in a Master/Apprentice relationship. Consider who you might want to work with in the future, and talk with company leadership for advice.
  • Come to Masters’ School: Make it a priority to come. This is your time to implement the Master/Apprentice relationship.
  • Be One: Just start. You’ll learn as you go.
